Just worked out what I wanted to do via Decode.. but i'll keep that gem tucked
away too!
just to note...
if you need your code to work on Oracle 8, you'll need to stick with Oracle's DECODE function but if you don't need to support Oracle 8 and use CASE rather than DECODE your SQL should work on multiple DBMSs (CASE is part of the SQL99 standard and is supported by current versions of SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle and PostgreSQL)
