Problem that is being overlook is why would it cause the CF
server to restart? if is the query took to long then wouldn't it time out
or generate some other error instead?

I had another thought on this as well.....
If you are using SQL*Server you may
consider having a Full Text index created.
Then you would use functions like
CONTAINS(columnname,conditions) or CONTAINSTABLE, etc. inside your query
instead of using LIKE.
