If your friend is working in Brisbane and isn't in a permanent job then he/she is probably a raving lunatic.
Most of the permanent jobs are paying not much under contract rates, plus they have lots of other benefits (like salary sacrifice to buy nice laptops, 4 weeks paid leave, sick leave, income insurance, payment to ambulance funds, just to name a few).
Given the old formula that my accountant used to use to determine the value of "contracting vs. permanent" in Brisbane at the moment I would have to be paid something $150K a year to match what I get as a permanent salary. And no - I am not going to tell you the formula so you can work that backwards.
However, as a contractor - you have to look at your hourly rate and then take 52 weeks of the year, subtract 4 weeks for the leave, subtract another 2 for the sick pay, who knows how much for income insurance, multiple by the fact you are probably working too many hours (even though you do get paid for them) and come up with a number. Each time the permanent job gives you more benefits (say like a nice bucket of training dollars - during which you STILL get paid your salary) blah blah blah.
Contracting sucks!
Your friend from Brisbane is probably one of those incapables that is stealing real good paying contracting jobs from the rest of us at bargain basement rates - and gives all of us a bad name into the bargain!!!!
