Three possible answers that I can think of:

1. DONT try and get the nice formatting and change it back - HTML will suppress multiple spaces - but not just one.
2. Put the word "GIFT" into a variable and do your nice formatting prior to your line and output the variable with either "GIFT" or "GIFTS" in it.
3. Put GIFTS in the positive case of your IF statement and put GIFT in a <CFELSE> section.
