I have used the iText java library called via a java cfx tag to do this. The iText library gives a complete API for pdf generation including encryption, pdfTables, document attributes, page sizing, margins, font formatting, columns, etc. - there is really nothing you can't do. I generate eight pages of very detailed pdf, one of those very detailed nasty forms that never seems to end the government gets you to fill out, in about 60 ms. Very quick and very stable. No COM objects or executables just pure java. Well worth looking into. The encryption side of it alone is worth the trouble,
