Peter,

Most Linux platforms will offer very stable performance with cf once
installed - repeat "once installed".

Linux is best of kept as a server platform unless you are ready for a
complete culture change - that change may or may not be worth it
depending on your situation. Your windows software wont run on Linux
without a conversion program, most progs do have open source
alternatives - that said they don't normally have the same polish or
exact features.

If you are after a desktop solution - redhat is the optimal choice, it
has by far the most resources available for support and documentation.
As a server it has many issues with the way it deals with installed
components - everything seems to be interconnected, if you change one
package be prepared to modify another 5 or 10 packages.

An issue may be that only mm supports rh7.2 - current version is 9, if
you are using the box as a workstation you probably should use v9
because of its better interface, more current driver/hardware options,
and its automatic update features etc.

The Linux path it is one you will only regret for a while.....keep
thinking of all the software that you will never have to purchase again
;)

Either way, setting up a server/workstation be it windows or Linux odds
are you will have some challenges.

We have had nothing but trouble getting rh9 & cfmx to work.

Best of luck
Steve

Subject: [cfaussie] ColdFusion MX on Linux

Hello

Does ColdFusion MX developer run better on Linux? I'm checking out the
Melbourne Linux Users Group tonight and I was told there was somebody
there who is an expert on Web Development.

I've been told to look at Mandrake and Red Hat. I'm worried about
compatibilty with hardware and my Windows software.

Thanks

Peter Mount
