I know when I was using it we just used the ASP version to build the
reports, and even that was problematic.

Yes it does need to be installed on the server.
There's other stuff you need to do and be aware of.
Oh, and also, it doesn't work often, and when it does it doesn't work
well.
Personally, I wouldn't bother.

We just went down this path, and we've now dumped Crystal and gone with
HTML2PDF which is a free java based tool based on iText that lets you
build pdf files on the fly.
