> damn gary, your a hard man to please ;)

I think this is probably the distinction I am making.

In going to a website - no matter what it is written in - I am looking to
have needs met. Some needs are related to eye-candy, others are related
to easy of use, others are related to how well information is delivered.
While I cannot dispute that the Flash movie is well written, obviously
functions as the creator intended, is consistent in its application of the
concept, etc. - it fails on too many of the other needs I am wanting met.
And eye-candy is down the bottom of the list when I am visiting a website
to find out information.

Here is another way I view it......

If I had been the product developer but not the designer/developer of the
flash movie, I would be annoyed that it would take a potential user of my
product so long to actually get to my product (I am assuming now that the
flash movie itself is a completely separate creation from the tools it is
trying to market). At no point during the presentation did the movie
indicate that it was built entirely on the toolset it was marketting. I
may have been more impressed then (assuming I wanted to write similar
applications).

But I will stop there before I upset too many other people.

As a tool I think Flash is brilliant.

But I am very strongly of the viewpoint that the web is about function -
not about form - and I have not yet found a "rich experience" that has not
gotten in the way of me getting the information that I want easily and
quickly. We talk about web page loading statistics. How you should not
make your users wait for unnecessary periods of time. Yet we then all go
and develop rich applications (no matter it being in Flash or DHTML or any
other client side scripting mechanism) that do just that and try to
justify it under some new buzzword and claim the user is better off. The
usability research still isn't stacking up on the side of "rich
experience".
