Wondering if anyone knows of and/or has experience using an open source project/job tracking system. Any recommendations?
Well the open source market is a little lacking in this area. One of the most mature would have to be Bugzilla -- pretty much all serious open source teams use this or a commerical product.
Daemon has used the TestTrack Pro product from Seapine (http://www.seapine.com) for many years. It's got a Mac/Linux/Windows GUI client, web based interface and SOAP interface. We liked it so much we became distributors for it -- so note a tinge of bias here :)
Another product I've had my eye on for some time is JIRA -- a J2EE based web app. Very slick and built here in Australia (http://www.atlassian.com/)
It depends how serious you need to be -- we track lots of ongoing projects and subprojects as part of our support service offering, so something that's very comprehensive is important to us. If you just have a small team on a single project the multitude of simple open source offerings may suffice (check http://freshmeat.net/).
