But as I was writing something for a friend who is using a very older
browser and he himself wanted to maintain the site, XML was not an issue
he wanted to pursue here. If it was me I would have used the XML method
so that I could get away with not having to frame the pages.

Sometimes older technologies can be the biggest pain in the ass.

Just a note....

The mechanism used with that API is to subject requests through a hidden

frame back to the server.  This is an "older" method - althought it
still 
works and is "generally" more portable between browsers.

Most of the current browsers now support a Javascript object (both IE
and 
Mozilla) that is much more efficient (it was already mentioned amongst
the 
other response - MSXML.XmlHttp/XMLHttpRequest).

The XMLExtras object I mentioned (at http://webfx.eae.net) is a wrapper 
around the XML objects for both those browsers.
