Yup - fair enough, but its a limited functionality version - basically a
hook to get you into a paid for product. PHP is 100%, start to finish,
completely and utterly free. It is also very widely supported - BlueDragon
is not. While paying for CF makes sense to me (I work with it everyday) and
in many other cases, it may not make sense to someone who wants to make a
single 5 page website with a sign up form and nothing more.

At the best of times f2o is not open to everyone, you have to apply and be
approved. Currently f2o have stopped taking any applications as they were
attacked by someone who got pissed when they were rejected. Don't get me
wrong f2o are tops & they do heaps of great things, but you can't really
justify going with CF "because you can host for free at f2o".

BTW: I'm not suggesting CF should be free or complaining that its not. Its a
commercial product & that's part of its strength.

I think CF is great in this area - sure you have to go back and relearn
syntax, but the underlying concepts (variables, array, flow control, etc..)
are very generic. I think in this aspect starting in CF is perfect.
