You example, how is that any different than calling

<TR class="#alternate()#">......</TR>

Your still calling a UDF either way.

When it comes to manipulating HTML on the fly like that you have no
alternative but to embed CF code straight into the HTML code, whether it be
with a CFIF or calling a UDF or any other method.

Just to echo what others have said......

Steer clear of using <CFIF> inside your HTML tags. Not because of any
"problems" but simply because you aren't maintaining a strong distance
between your code and your presentation.

Wherever possible, the MOST I try to do in terms of combining CF and HTML
at the presentation point is put things into variables and then wrap that
into the ## for output. I don't/won't even call a CF Function or UDF
inside HTML if I can avoid it. And even then, in most "presentation"
related things, I use a CSS style (as you are already doing) and throw
that into the variable so that the layout of the presentation is still
easy to change.

If anyone is interested, we have a little UDF here that was written by
Vaughan that allows you to create up a list of alternatives and cycle
through them on each call. You give it a list of "things" (in the example
in question the "things" would be "classnames") and then use another call
to retrieve the "current" value. Email me direct if you want the
functions. There is a plan to convert this into a CFC sometime soon.

e.g. (uses simplest case of only one list on the page - multiple lists are
supported)

<CFSCRIPT>
        createAlternateList("lightRowCol,darkRowCol");
</CFSCRIPT>

Then, where you want to use it:

        <CFSET thisAlt = alternate()>
        <TR class="#thisAlt#">......</TR>

The API is as follows [optional parameters in brackets]:

createAlternateList(listitems[,listname[,delimiters]])
textAlternate = alternate([listname])
resetAlternate([listname])
textAlternate = lastAlternate([listname])

lastalternate is more useful than you might think - e,g, when you have
something that conditionally spans multiple rows you can just call
"lastalternate" to ensure you are using the same value.
