I know you asked about "Flash Based" but have you looked at XLoadTree from
the WebFX people (in Javascript and works seamlessly across
IE/Moz/Firebird)?

http://webfx.eae.net/dhtml/xloadtree/xloadtree.html

The reason I mention this is because it uses a "linear" approach to
building the tree. That is, it goes back to the server to get subsequent
nodes of the tree as they are opened rather than trying to load the whole
tree in one go (always something evil to do no matter what the lnaguage
when you have "100's and 100's of nodes").

It uses the XML services available in modern browsers (wrapped up in a
compatibility layer) to communicate synchronously or asynchronously
(programmers choice) to get the data for the current node.

Once that has been loaded, it will simply just re-use what is already in
it's arrays.

Now, I am really not a Flash guru (and many on these lists will call me a
Flash Sceptic) but the issues I have always had with Flash for
menus/lists/trees is that the coupling between the actual page and what
you are trying to do with the navigation is "challenging". So I guess
this is why we don't see so many "Flash" solutions to things like
navigation trees that are tightly integrated with scripting on the actual
HTML page itself.

I know there are "integration" layers to link Flash up with Javascript -
but these have always seemed clumsy to work with.

If anybody has any latest kewl stuff that makes this easier let me know -
cause if the integration between the page and Flash was simpler I would
probably use it more.
