While all this works find with regard to MS products, there are lots of other databases out there (MySQL, Postgre, etc.) that it doesn't work on that are widely used in shared sites as well as commercial installations. The only reliable cross-platform way (that I have used) to ensure I can get back a new identity column is to add another column to the record that I can insert a UUID into (using CF's createUUID - and there are similar functions available in other scripting languages). Then I recall the record (using a SELECT) with that UUID and get out my identity column just after I have done the INSERT. Of course, if you are going to do this, you may consider abandoning the identity column in favour of the UUID as the unique key instead. This technique will work in ANY database that can store a string. The downside of this is the fact that all the primary keys you use this technique on would be a string (instead of an integer). The "cost" of this would depend on how optimised you want to be able to make your database. NOTE: for those using FarCry, this is the mechanism it uses to generate unique keys for all of it's content objects - it doesnt use (well rarely uses) identity fields.
