I would agree with you if we had a decent RDBMS. The DB server's as fast as it's going to get, Firebird is not a scalable solution (for one it doesn't support SMP), so imediatley you'll see if you have the fastest CPU around (and another for whatever else the box might be doing) you're already at a significant bottleneck. This is the point we're at.
I would take the statement you made of "our data server is extremely taxed" as a hint that it is time to upgrade. It is unlikely that anything you do will reduce the load on your database server enough to make a difference if it is already at threshold.
We just need a new RDMBS, but that'll take some significant time, and in the meantime, we're putting in a farm of them, but again, that's not a quick solution.
I generally use QofQ for "variations" on reporting against a result set. Meaning that you sometimes want to just do one query and present several "views" of that data. This generally means that I just filter the data I have loaded with a WHERE clause and possible do some aggregations.Under the logic above wouldn't this also be quicker to just do another query? Assuming network traffic is not an issue (it isn't)....
Everything else I do directly to the database - either through views or direct table access.
