Okay, we have a little progress...

If I start the MySQL daemon with the --skip-grant-tables option,
everything works fine, thus:

mysqld_safe --user=mysql --skip-grant-tables &

But, I shouldn't have to do this, right? So, what I need is some advice
from someone who is more up to speed on MySQL than me (not a difficult
thing, I expect), who can advise me on what I need to do to fix the
grant tables issue.
