Yeah - lovely isn't it. Something to do with the JDBC driver I think (we had
this problem moving CF5 apps to MX). Pretty much any date function or blob
field will return binary data.

The only way around it is to run a string function of some sort over it (at
the DB level). I think even trim() will work.
