Except of course in Taco's example the I think form will be submitted even if any 
verification you do in test_alert() fails (so even if you're returning false I think 
it will still submit?)

I generally do what Taco said except:

        onClick="if(test_alert()) document.siDetailsAdd.submit();"

OR BETTER STILL:

        onClick="test_alert();"

and in test_alert(); do your verification then call document.formname.submit();
