I am creating a table structure that requires 3 records per row.

I could have used a counter to place the "</tr><tr>" every third record to
create the table columns, but in the end I just used a cfloop, stepped by
three, and indexed the records directly based on the index of the loop. (+1
or +2). After checking that I wasn't at the end of the recordset beforehand.

Using moveNext I could have just used the cfloop, eg:
<cfloop query="rs_output">
    check -> output -> movenext
    check -> output -> movenext
    check -> output
</cfloop>

I am wondering why you would need a moveNext().

In CF you use <CFLOOP> or <CFOUTPUT> to iterate over your query/recordSet.
 All you would do (or all I do) is decide on some conditions for skipping
records and just let the loop do the moveNext().

e.g.

<CFLOOP query="myquery">
   <CFIF [some test here that decides the record should be processed]>
      <!--- process the record here --->
   </CFIF>
   <!---
      moveNext() technically would be happening about here
      i.e. in the </CFLOOP>
   --->
</CFLOOP>

If, however, you are wanting to move backwards and forwards in the
recordSet arbitarily then, as Barry suggests, load it all into an array OR
search the Archive - Taco posted a mechanism (using SQL) that allows you
to page records without having to get the whole query down (although I had
troubles getting it to work).
