We have approx 4000 clients, and we store approx 25 pages for each client
(contracts, bank statements, copies of drivers licence etc). The
clients files are stored in a manual filing system (filing cabinets) at
the moment. (which obviously takes up a lot of space).

If I scan the docs into a PDF file (all the docs are text documents), the
file size is approx 1MB (per client).

These files need not be accessed on a daily basis, but when the
information is needed we must be able to get at it almost instantly (like
walking up to the filing cabinet and taking out a file).

Any ideas on archiving these PDF files? Is it just a case of putting them
all in one directory? If so is there a limit on the number of files in a
directory and does the number of files affect performance?

Although this is not a Coldfusion problem, I will have to link it into my
CF application.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks

Gavin Irons
