that's not quite true, though unlocked access to shared scope variables will no longer cause CF server instability, it is still recommended to use an exclusive lock when setting shared scope variables to avoid race conditions
Only if race conditions matter to your code - race conditions are unlikely with session scope. See Ben Forta's recent blog entry:
