Now the page or url in this case does not exist, but CF does not throw an
error like the docs say it should. Is this a known bug or am I really just
being stupid on this?
Are you sure the site you're hitting is actually returning a 404 status code? If it has a custom error page or some custom error handling, it might be returning a 200 status code for the error page it hands back. Check cfhttp.statuscode (I think).
