This is so well written even I understood most of it! ;)
He nailed it.
However, someone needs to introduce Joel to CFMX and Flash PDQ!
Ever tried preaching "Christianity" to a "Muslim"?.. you can try it, but expect some kind of Holey war as a backlash :)
Different Flavors, ASP/VB isn't all that bad, I've been playing with C# for a few weeks now, and i must say, i respect it to a point. I still love CFMX over ASPX though, but VB .NET vs FLASH MX ... unless I'm making an app for the web .NET is easier :D and less painful.
But he nailed it all perfectly, and I'm one of those dickheads who decided to learn / use WinForms... now if Longhorn makes it to market, thats a big wast of my time in learning it.
I loved the part where DHTML was given a low priority due to the danger of it overtaking the Operating System/Client-top model, in that if you evolve a technology like DHTML more, you effectively are in danger of dislodging the need for a specific OS (i.e Linux? Mac? etc).
Its all a conspiracy ;) hehehe.

Anyone familiar with the site http://www.joelonsoftware.com?
There was a link in the Community MX newsletter to an article on this site. "How Microsoft Lost the API War". I don't know who this guy is (other than he worked for IBM and Microsoft), but this is a really, really good article. Covers Microsoft plans, future products such as Longhorn and Avalon, desktop programming vs web based, .Net...a whole slew of things. The article is long, so grab some coffee and get comfy, but IMO, it's a very valuable read.
