I don't intend this to turn into a netiquette debate or a flame war. I have a simple request.
If you are going to put a link in a post to this list, it would make it much easier for the members of this list if you included a small paragraph to explain what the link was about. This allows people to decide whether they actually are interested in what's on the other end of the link or not. For example: -------------------- "Microsoft slashes Paris prices" http://australianit.news.com.au/articles/0,7204,10018498%5E15306%5E%5Enbv%5E ,00.html anyone feel like commenting where CF might fit in all of this? -------------------- would have been more helpful if it had been worded like this: -------------------- MICROSOFT has slashed its prices for Paris City Hall by more than half as the French capital prepares for a major computer systems upgrade and weighs a possible switch to free open source software. http://australianit.news.com.au/articles/0,7204,10018498%5E15306%5E%5Enbv%5E ,00.html anyone feel like commenting where CF might fit in all of this? -------------------- The original post left me wondering what function this new Microsoft product code named 'Paris' was going to do. All I did was cut the first paragraph rather than its cryptic title. Similarly, this: -------------------- See: http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/ Am downloading SQL 2005 now to check it out. -------------------- Could have been this: -------------------- The Express products, expanding the Visual Studio product line to include lightweight, easy-to-use, easy-to-learn tools for hobbyists, enthusiasts, and novices who want to build dynamic Windows applications and Web sites. http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/ Am downloading SQL 2005 now to check it out. -------------------- Again, I've just cut the first paragraph from the page. You may even have added something about these products being free if you wanted. This will make people much more likely to click on these links if they are interested, and won't waste their time if they aren't. This post is just a suggestion. Take it or leave it. I won't comment further on this and I certainly won't be chastising people who post undescribed links like this in the future. Similarly, neither Barry or Peter should take this as a personal criticism. Everyone's done it. I've probably done it. I just think there has to be a better way.
