That was actually an algorithm I wrote for a guy who needed a 16 character uuid for some reason or other - the original post:

A full 35 character UUID has even less chance of a duplicate.

Despite all this, I still feel a strange sense of loss when I throw away uuids I generate during testing - must have been permanently scarred by all those episodes of the Wombles I watched when I was younger...
