In that particular case, it was talking to lots of people about CF over a long time, lots of CF developement, noticing how the CF debug output renders queries that use queryparam, reading widely (in this case Rod Johnson's excellent J2EE book and the Java API documentation), which allowed me to guess the right search terms to type into Google, namely:
