thanks for the link Daryl but i have done all the
things suggested. it just isn't resolving the domain name from the hosts file
even though IE can...

I
had this problem with an external URL, however it could still be relevant....
Has the IP address of the machine changed at all (i.e. are you using localhost
or a domain name)?

You've said that it's already in the
hosts file, so I guess that ain't the problem. But the above technote may
help.
