I suppose how i would approach option 3 could be to have two urls. app1.intranet and app2.intranet.
Then you could map them both to the same code, and have a few lines of code in the application.cfm to determine which url they are using- and thus the application name. Farcry uses this type of idea to use the same code for every sites admin pages.
