Argh. Never mind.
I'd run the update query on TOAD, which of course doesn't commit anything by default. So - I'm guessing - when I ran the same process on CF, it hung around waiting to see if I might like to commit my first lot of updates first before doing them all again. Once I closed TOAD in despair and told it to commit eveything, it occurred to me to re-run the CF process, and it worked no worries. Sigh.
