To add to Anthony's I'd also suggest the Australian feed at Moreover:

I've personally used the SMH feeds but consider them average.

Both SMH & Moreover only give the headline, no teaser, but I guess you can expect much from an organisation that wants to sell news.

You might like to also look at News Is Free (found it by googling "australia rss"):

http://www.newsisfree.com/sources/bycat/110/

They farm headlines and re-syndicate content, but their "top 10" feeds always have the first article as an ad (something Moreover also do).
