"ask not what your CFUG can do for you but what you can do for your
CFUG"

That's all fine and well if people actually want to do stuff for cfug. I think the
developers use CFUG as an emergency. I see it
all the time when I see new faces.

ME : "Oh looks like we have a new person with us tonight"
PERSON : "No not really. I used to come years ago but I stopped coming. I am back
out in the work force looking for work so I
thought I would come along and do a little networking"

I get that sooo much, it almost makes me sick.

People come to the meetings when something interests them, or when they are looking to
hook up with someone for work.

I was actually very surprised to find that there wasn't a very big turnout for Marks
preso. Eclipse has been a very frequent topic
on the CFAUSSIE list, and from what I can see from the conversation is a very good
alternative to the dreamweavers and homesites.

I even had a week where is someone brought along a guest, they would get a free book,
and not one person brought a guest. In fact
that week I think I only had 5 people turn up.

I even had one guy turn up one night and the first thing that came out of his mouth
was "where's the food?"

I mean really!!

The CFUG groups are a very powerfull thing when the development community get involved
and takes an interest.

We have lots of resources and contacts available to the group members, and sadly they
will start to dwindle away if people don't
become more interested.

Yes I know meetings are after work, and you probably rather be going home, but it is
an opportunity to network and meet other people
in the industry. Take Mark for a prime example. He probably wouldn't be working
where he is if it wasn't for the user group. His
employer called me, and asked me if there was any developers in the group looking for
work, so I passed his name on and he has been
working there for about 2 years now.

Employers do scout through these groups, so we cant know who you are is you show up
once in a blue moon or not at all.

Steve Onnis

I think Darren Tracey (Bris CFUG mgr) covered this in a post a couple of
days ago.

mate, it comes down to commitment, time, organisation. more of bums on
seats, more of people willing to put their hand up to help, etc.

I see it at my kids schools with parent support groups - the same few
good natured souls carrying the can for many.

Ever heard of Fred Hollows? He had an amazing knack to get things
happening - cutting thru the BS - but he was just one guy. 9 times out
of 10 all it took to get programs going in Eretria or Redfern was people
willing to get off their backsides.

"ask not what your CFUG can do for you but what you can do for your
CFUG"

ever thought of setting up a West Syd CFUG, based in Paramatta? it
sounds like it's needed...

This really shows the state CFUG's in Australia.

Personally, I have not been to a meeting; When living in Sydney, I
could never make it to Glebe in time as I worked in Parramatta and
lived out in the suburbs.

Perhaps something more (but what?) could be done to raise ColdFusion
awareness...
