I doubt google sets aside 1024MB of hard drive space for every new
Gmail user. I would imagine their capacity management would revolve
heavily around intelligent compression and forecasting of how much
space people will realistically use on average, rather than how much
they are assigned.

I also recall reading that google stores a ton of their information in
RAM-based solid state storage, for seek time reasons and because the
MTBF of even the best hard drives would make it a constant full time
job for multiple people to wander around swapping out failed drives.
