I have a client with a limited budget (don't they all) who wants to set up a portal site, with paid directory submissions, banner advertising, and news. So I want to use something that's ready to go out of the box as much as possible.
Have a look at mambo server, portal in a box basically. Not sure if it includes a directory, but you might find a plugin to handle that.
