No-one's doubting it's possible to come up with hard to follow code using
the short-circuited operators, but it's equally possible to mangle code
with with nothing but a list, a couple of <cfset> tags and a loop of some
description (random example).

Obviously - as you're always so keen to remind us - you've got far more
experience with such things than I do, but I think it's throwing the baby
out with the bath water to say "don't use this construct because it's
possible to create unmanagable code with it".  If that's the logic... we be
better all de-install CF from our PCs immediately! ;-)
