Yep SQL EM has "performance monitor" called SQL Profiler and it is pretty
handy - not much so on a dev box though as it would be on a production
server. My db is hosted in the USofA don't think I could run it. Mind you I
haven't tried so...

I distinctly remember being able to use perfmon to measure the number of
active connections, using the MSSQL counter object.

Keep looking? :) I'm pretty sure you can launch it from enterprise manager.
I would have a look but we no longer use MS SQL any more.
