Although it may work, its not very good for search engines. When a search engine indexes your site, all its going to get returned is 404-page not found and your site will start to loose its ranking. One of the main purposes for "friendly URLs" is to be friendly for search engines and all it does it kill the search engine friendliness because of the 404 your creating.
I remember myself and Mark Mandel tested this, and because of the handshake its not very good.
