So you put a hosts entry in there?

If it's a Windows box you can do ipconfig /flushdns just in case it
has a borked resolver cache...alternately you can get around the
entire DNS issue by just calling the remote machine by ip address.

If the problem STILL occurs intermittently after bypassing dns
altogether then it may be a routing problem between the two boxes. If
they are physically next to each other and have multiple nics you can
create a dedicated link (often done between DB and webservers)...but
eventually it just becomes easier to port your system over to PHP :)
