Laptops have decent enough sound for situations in which the signal is degraded and compressed anyway (like FM or net radio), though they can suffer from terrible amounts of interference noise. For live performances and music composition or recording, I've got an Echo Indigo PCMCIA 24/96 card. It sounds amazing. The noise floor is much lower than that of my ears :).
