steve's after a count of unique values, which is different. Microsoft Access 
doesn't support COUNT DISTINCT. (At least, it didn't in Access 97 and I haven't 
got a later copy to try now)

this is another way of skilling this Jet Cat: split it up...

select COUNT(ColumnName) as theCount
from (select DISTINCT(ColumnName) from tablename)

another is to create a saved query (Access's simple "view") of the DISTINCT 
part and do a count on that.
