Yeah, I got an XPS Gen 2 last week and I'm pretty impressed.

The only complaint so far is that when I tried to put it in my MXDU bag to come down to teach Flex in Oakland I realized I couldn't get the thing zipped up without some serious shoe-horning. 17" is a lot of screen real estate for a laptop. It's a bit like sitting in the front of the cinema ;-)

I bought a nice samsonite bag at Oakland airport though, so it's all good.

I got a full 2 hours of coding plus a bit on the flight down plus a bit in the departures lounge before hand, so the battery life isn't too bad for such a high powered machine. That's with the default 9 cell battery, so the 16 cell one should be good for 3-3.5 hours I think.

The weight is mid to high range at 8.6lbs, but that's only a pound or so more than my old machine, so I didn't notice much difference.

One other thing is that if you're doing hardcore coding or gaming the fans tend to come on and are a bit noisy, but that doesn't bother me too much and they're off most of the time.

Definitely highly recommended for the $2400 that it cost me. That's for 1Gb of RAM, 2GHz processor, and a 60GB 7200 rpm hard drive.

The graphics performance ain't too shabby either:

Most of the equivalent numbers in those benchmarks are quite a bit better than the performance of the alienware :-)
