I had a similar problem and it drove me nuts for days!!! It turned out to be a conflict with norton internet security (well its firewall to be more specific)... even disabling it wasn't enough - it had to be removed completely. i'm now using norton antivirus and windows firewall and all is working swell... go figure *shrug*
