Ahh yes, it is server side: minor brain fart there.

You are opening up a big can of worms security wise. This is probably
why there is not much around. I would think the browser would not
allow access to the local file system, even if it is from a signed
activeX object. It's just a big no-no. It's this reason input
type="file" is read only.

But you are right, it is hard to find the right keywords. :) I tried
"browser client file explorer" but they are all too generic to produce
any useful results.

Tried browsing through the developers exchange on macromedia.com?
