It depends on the gateway. Tom Jordahl has a great article on mm.com about the event gateway architecture that explains this. The socket gateway that ships with CFMX 7 is essentially a server application - it starts up, listens to a port and manages socket connections from clients. The IM gateways, by contrast, are effectively client applications - they start up and connect to a server and then act as a headless client.
