Thanks to David for the link to CFAjax: http://www.indiankey.com/cfajax/

I am looking into it and was wondering if any of you had any
experience with it?

I'ma about two weeks down the track and am having great fun with it. It works very well and is not hard if your js is up to it and you are DOM-familiar. From that perspective the (DWR) util.js is very handy. I found it useful to print off the javascript documentation on the DWR site so I knew what I could do directly a little better without having to hack my own code.
