And then there will be the day where the Client wants it to fit on 1280.
It will never end because resolutions will always get higher. It's just part of the nature of progress.

We started doing some sites at 1024. When a client didn't like the design because it was hidden by their favourites panel in IE we had to redo 3 designs. They said it was the default to have favourites open and demanded a redesign. Caused all sorts of problems because of the volume of info they wanted on the front page.
Personally I would go for 1024 but when it's for a client, you have to cater for the lowest common denominator which at the moment would probably be 800.
I can't wait for the day when the standard is 1024. With the sizes and price of monitors these days, it should be getting close.
