Gareth, Sorry I did say without going into to much detail that I have tried JDBC drivers, and sql 2000 isn't much good as I already know how to setup JDBC drivers under cf for that. I have the ms JDBC drivers for sql 2005 and can't get it to work with Coldfusion at all.
Was hoping that someone out there had better luck than I did with the official JDBC drivers from ms. Or even setting up a datasource under CF.
