Yeah..

Doing stuff like this in XSL is a real pain in the butt.. because it
doesn't really handle data massaging very well -

You can sort and order and display with the best - but when you want
to add x + y, you are in a bit of trouble.

I know I ended up doing exactly what you are looking at with a CSS
text-transform when I needed to do this.

But if you want to really do it natively - here is a way:
