To add to this, there are at least 2 other times where I know CFCs will
act like this, both involve load.

1) CFLib has a cfc method to retrieve UDFs. Every now and then, the
query inside would return.... nothing but something. A variable returned
that wasn't null nor a query. This shows up under load quite
consistently. MACR knows about this.

2) I found a new one today. My blog has been suffering an issue where
people would get errors when they posted a comment. What was odd about
the error is that it said foo was not a method of the cfc, when in
reality I knew it was. I'd even go and test and it would work.
 
In _both_ cases, the CFC was being cached in the application scope. As
soon as I remove the CFC from cache, it works.
