<cfset thisTest=1> <cfoutput>#Variables.thisTest#</cfoutput>
works in regular CFML pages.
But in regular CFML pages, "thisTest=1" is shorthand for "variables.thisTest=1" whereas if you say (inside a UDF / CFC method):
<cfset var thisTest=1>
then you are creating thisTest in 'var' scope which is different to 'variables' scope.
