I have /model/dfa.cfc which is the main DFA component but I don't know how best to call it. Should I create the standard three dfadao.cfc, dfagateway.cfc and dfamanager.cfc and then register dfamanager.cfc as a listener?
That sounds fairly reasonable (based on the limited information you've provided).
Has anyone done this before?
Yes, see the example code in the Mach II Development Guide (under Database Access Objects in the Designing Models section):

"SOAP is not so much a means of transmitting data but a mechanism for calling COM objects over the Web."
